What is Single Sign-On?

Single Sign-Ons, or SSOs, are login systems that let users authenticate multiple accounts using one set of credentials. Because password fatigue is so common among users, many websites have already implemented their own SSO systems. For example, many websites give users the option to “login with Google” – this allows users to connect their Google accounts to other websites, meaning these users will only need to remember one email and password across multiple platforms. This is generally considered safe because Google uses a process called OAuth, which allows third-party websites to access and receive only select pieces of information from Google to authenticate users. At humanID, we have developed a completely anonymous SSO system that is a much safer alternative to the aforementioned traditional SSO systems because it reduces the risk for data breaches. humanID’s SSO is a completely password-less system, only requiring the use of a phone number, eliminating the need for users to reveal their email address to platforms and reducing the likelihood that their information will be stolen. Rather than using an email to authenticate users, humanID’s SSO asks for users’ phone numbers and sends users a passcode via SMS to authenticate them. Revealing one’s phone number to a platform would normally seem just as risky as revealing one’s email address, but humanID’s system has been designed to mitigate this risk.

How humanID’s SSO Works

humanID’s SSO is a password-less login system that authenticates users by sending a passcode to their phones via text message, but how can this system allow users to remain anonymous if they must reveal their phone numbers to the platform? humanID accomplishes this by using two levels of encoding. When a user logs in using humanID’s system, they first give their phone number to humanID and it is verified with a passcode that is sent to that number via SMS. After the user is verified, their phone number is hashed with a random identifier and the original number is securely deleted. That hash is their humanID and never leaves our servers, drastically reducing the likelihood of users losing their personal information to malicious actors.
